In short
- Each balance: what you paid minus your share.
- Check: balances add up to zero and total paid equals total shared.
- If it's off, check who each expense was for and whether a payment was logged as an expense.
An example: a weekend for four
Sarah pays for the cabin ($360) and Jake for groceries ($120), both for all four. Priya pays for gas ($60) for Sarah, Luis and herself, because Jake took the bus. Luis pays for the wine ($45) for Jake, Priya and himself, because Sarah doesn't drink.
| Person | Paid | Share | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sarah | $360 | $140 | +$220 |
| Jake | $120 | $135 | −$15 |
| Priya | $60 | $155 | −$95 |
| Luis | $45 | $155 | −$110 |
Cabin and groceries: $120 a head. Gas: $20 and wine: $15 for whoever used them. To settle up, Jake, Priya and Luis pay Sarah $15, $95 and $110.
Two checks to know the math is right
- Balances add up to zero: +220 − 15 − 95 − 110 = 0.
- Total paid equals total shared: the group paid $585, and 140 + 135 + 155 + 155 is also $585.
If either check fails, the mistake is in the numbers you entered, not the subtraction.
Mistakes that throw off group balances
- An expense split with everyone that was only for some: split the gas four ways and Jake pays $15 for a drive he didn't take.
- A payment logged as an expense: when Luis pays Sarah back, that settles his debt; it's not a new expense to split.
- The same expense entered twice or a number copied wrong from the receipt.
Go through it one expense at a time: how much, who paid and who it was for. More in splitting expenses with friends.
Do it in Divall
With Nights out you skip the table and the checks:
- Log each expense with who paid and whether it is for everyone, a group or one person.
- Snap the receipt so AI reads it, and review the amounts before adding them.
- Divall simplifies debts and shows who pays who. Each payment is marked as paid and confirmed by whoever gets it; Divall keeps the record, and everyone sends their own money.
Nights out is free (up to 20 accounts every 30 days, 2 open at a time and 10 AI readings); Vacation is part of Divall Pro. Divall is free to start: your group's next tab closes with every balance in plain sight.
Frequently asked questions
Why does everyone see a different balance?
Usually because people tracked expenses on their own or with different numbers. Keep one shared list for the whole group and work out the balances from it.
Do we have to pay back each expense separately?
No. With net balances, only the people who owe pay the people who are owed, in just a few transfers.
