What is small spending?

It’s the small purchases you make so often you stop noticing them: the morning coffee, the delivery fee, the afternoon snack, the subscription you no longer use. One alone doesn’t show; together, over a month, they can be a big part of what you spend. In Spanish they’re called gastos hormiga, “ant expenses”: tiny, but they carry a lot.

How to work out what they add up to

  1. A month = amount × times a week × 52 ÷ 12. If it’s daily, × 365 ÷ 12.
  2. A year = the monthly amount × 12.

Delivery, $122 a week$104$1,248
Snack, $33 a week$39$468
Total$240.50$2,886

How DivMe finds them

In DivMe, an expense counts as small spending when it’s under a small amount (by default $5 in US dollars, or $20,000 in Colombian pesos; you can change it) and repeats 4 or more times a month. DivMe marks them for you and shows how much you’ve spent on them this month and what that would be over a year at that pace.

It’s not about giving up coffee. It’s about knowing what it adds up to and deciding if it’s worth it. Read more in the guide what small spending is and how to cut it.

FAQ

About small spending

What counts as small spending?

A small purchase you make again and again, like coffee, delivery fees or snacks. On its own it seems like little, but over a month and a year it can add up to a lot.

How small is “small”?

There’s no fixed number: it depends on your income and your currency. In DivMe it counts when it’s under a small amount (by default $5 in US dollars; you can change it) and repeats 4 or more times a month.

Do I have to cut them all?

No. The idea is to know what they add up to and decide which ones are worth it. Cutting one or two in half already makes a difference over a year.

Is what I type saved?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
