How to work out the tip
A tip is a percentage of the bill. To work it out and split it:
- Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100.
- Total = bill + tip.
- Each person = total ÷ number of people, if you split evenly.
The 10% shortcut
10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left: 10% of $86.00 is $8.60. Double it for 20% ($17.20), or add half of it for 15% ($8.60 + $4.30 = $12.90).
An $86.00 bill split four ways
| Tip | Amount | Total | Each |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15% | $12.90 | $98.90 | $24.73 |
| 18% | $15.48 | $101.48 | $25.37 |
| 20% | $17.20 | $103.20 | $25.80 |
When the total doesn’t divide evenly, each share is rounded to the cent.
How much should you tip?
It depends on the country and the service. In the United States, 15% to 20% is customary at sit-down restaurants. In many Latin American countries, such as Colombia, the tip is voluntary and 10% is the most common, often suggested on the bill. If service is already included, you don’t need to add it again.
When not everyone ordered the same
Splitting evenly is quick, but it isn’t always fair: if two people had wine and two didn’t, the ones who didn’t end up paying for part of the wine and its tip. The fair way is for everyone to pay for what they had, with the tip split in the same proportion.
That’s what Divall does in a Food and drinks account: mark who had what, choose the tip, and it shows what each person pays and who owes whom. We go through it step by step in the guide how to split the bill with tip.
FAQ
About tipping
How do I work out a 20% tip?
Move the decimal point one place to the left to get 10%, then double it. For an $86.00 bill, 10% is $8.60 and 20% is $17.20.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Many people tip on the amount before tax, but tipping on the total is common too. Enter whichever amount you prefer to tip on.
How do you split the tip if people ordered different things?
The fair way is in proportion to what each person had: whoever ordered more pays more tip. Divall does it for you in a Food and drinks account.
Is what I type saved?
No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
